Not every AI task needs the same level of reasoning. Anthropic introduced Claude Haiku 5.5 on October 7, positioning the small model for frequent, narrowly scoped work such as summaries, classification, and database queries.
The release adds an adjustable effort setting to the Haiku family. Anthropic also describes using Haiku alongside larger models as a subagent, and lists availability through its platform and major cloud providers. Those are vendor claims about intended use and distribution; they are not Stacktak performance measurements. The announcement includes the evaluation details.
Route the task before choosing the model
A support workflow illustrates the distinction. Labeling an incoming message, extracting its order number, and deciding how to handle an unusual dispute are three different jobs. A team could evaluate a smaller model on the first two and reserve more involved reasoning for cases that need it.
Our suggested test is a small set of real, anonymized examples with known answers. Record incorrect labels, missed fields, response time, and the human corrections required. A cheaper call is not a cheaper workflow if it sends enough mistakes downstream. The meaningful comparison is the cost of an acceptable result for that particular task.
