# Figma’s code layers enter open beta with prototypes on the canvas

> Teams can bring supported prototype code into the shared design canvas and explore alternatives together, instead of passing around separate development sessions.

A working prototype is useful until nobody else knows where to find it. Figma’s code layers, moved into open beta on October 15, bring code-backed experiments onto the same shared canvas as the team’s design work.

Figma describes importing supported, lightweight prototype codebases from GitHub or a local folder. Teammates can try alternatives side by side, leave feedback, and duplicate a code layer to explore another direction. Imports from GitHub remain connected to their repository. [The launch post](https://www.figma.com/blog/design-together-with-code-layers/) sets out those capabilities.

## Review the interaction while the question is still open

Consider a search experience where the debate is about how results react as someone types. A static frame can leave that behavior ambiguous. A shared prototype gives designers and engineers something specific to discuss before the interaction becomes expensive to change.

The distinction to preserve is between exploring behavior and shipping it. A prototype may still need accessible keyboard handling, real data, resilient loading states, and production integration. In a pilot, label those gaps explicitly. Otherwise a convincing demonstration can quietly become a requirement that the team never agreed to build.
