Small pull requests are easier to reason about, but a sequence of dependent changes can be hard to follow. Linear’s October 8 update adds stacked pull requests to Diffs, giving that sequence a visible structure.
Related PRs are grouped in a collapsible row in Reviews, alongside issue and project context. Reviewers can move through the stack and see review, CI, and merge status. For GitHub-native stacks, Linear also describes previewing affected PRs before merging the current change and those below it. The release notes explain the addition.
Preserve the order of the argument
Imagine a feature split into a data model change, an API update, and a new interface. Reading only the last diff can make a sensible decision look unexplained. A stack gives the reviewer a route through the work and makes the dependency between changes explicit.
The practical benefit depends on the team’s habits. Each PR still needs a clear purpose, a testable scope, and an explanation of what it assumes from earlier work. A useful first check is whether a teammate unfamiliar with the feature can navigate the sequence and identify exactly which change is ready to merge.
