A multilingual meeting no longer needs everyone to agree on one language pair. Google Meet began rolling out expanded speech translation on October 22, covering 63 languages with automatic detection when speakers change languages.
According to Google’s announcement, each listener can choose whether to enable translation and which languages they already understand. Translated captions accompany the audio. The update covers web, Android, and iOS, with mobile users needing an updated app.
The rollout and meeting plan still matter
Distributed teams can follow the same discussion in different languages without repeatedly changing a shared meeting setting.
Rapid Release rollout started on October 22 with a one-to-three-day visibility window. Scheduled Release starts on November 2 and can take up to 15 days. An announcement this week therefore does not mean every organization already has the feature.
The host needs an eligible Workspace or Google AI plan. Translation has a 90-minute meeting limit on eligible base plans and Google AI Pro, rising to eight hours on specified higher AI plans. It does not extend to recordings or client-side encrypted meetings.
Google’s usage guide also warns that live translation can make mistakes. Treat translated speech as assistance with the conversation, and verify important commitments with the speaker.
